Not So Equal Rights: an epic tale of the battle between homophobia and the HRC

“All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression.”- Thomas JeffersonSince moving to college, I have had the opportunity to meet a variety of incredible people. The liberal attitude and the free-spirited mentality adopted by most college students not only made me feel like a part of things, but also taught me a lot about people from other cultures and different walks of life: primarily the LBGT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community.Coming from a small town, I was taught about sexuality in a very single-minded, heterosexual, and abstinence-only mindset, so it wasn’t until my junior year of high school that I met someone who had just come out. His anxiety about this transition was further amplified by the snide comments and whispered ignominies reverberating throughout the school. Watching him struggle in his quest to find himself opened my eyes up to the blatant incivilities experienced by the LGBT community.
